Hey! So Glad You're Here.

As an interaction designer I focus on creating meaningful and well-formed interactions with technology to accomplish healthy relations between humans and technology. I emphasize the meaningfulness and aesthetics of interactions. To achieve this, I have focused on growing skills in creating high-quality (visual) aesthetics during my education. My main design skills lie in the areas of Creativity & Aesthetics and Technology & Realization.

In the era of ubiquitous computing our relationships with technology should not be overwhelming or distracting. The human-technology-interactions I design are of low-intensity, somewhat abstract and target the periphery of the user. My designs fall within the concept of Calm Technology which is “the practice of designing technology so that it’s as unnoticeable as possible. In other words, it is the design of human-computer interfaces to feel like nontechnology experiences such as having a conversation or taking a walk.” [1]

Medium describes Calm Technology as “focused around using technology to support a user in their daily life, not interrupt them from it.” [2] In my process, I lend aspects of a research-though-design approach. In doing so I find appropriate aesthetics of interaction [3], their meanings and their suitable applications in technological products. During a project I allow myself to take a step back, look at the initial set of requirements and opportunities that were formulated, and redirect focus when new, more promising chances appear.

Through my hands-on approach to design, I find I can come up with, communicate and perform experiments with my design concepts though exploratory making and demonstrating with high-quality prototypes. I am proficient in creating electronic circuits, and I am more than proficient in creating physical, high-quality prototypes and enabling them with real-time data. Tactility and craftsmanship are my media to communicate with others what and I am designing for our future relationships with technology.

In a team project, I am not someone who exclusively takes on leader roles. I feel I have strength in assessing the needs of a team, shaping my responsibilities and position to what is helpful and necessary. I can lead a group of people, be led by others, and keep group dynamics pleasant and productive. One weakness of mine is scoping. When not knowing where a project will lead me, this makes me uncomfortable. Working in teams rather than individually helps me with this issue. By having regular meetings where my peers and I take a step back, reflect on our final goal and build plans for these goals.
